How a Geriatrician may Benefit you

Published on

There are few that understand how to treat illnesses and various medical problems in older men and women than Geriatricians. However, their role in the greater healthcare community remains poorly understood, and as a result, their profession is not commonly known.

Essentially, a Geriatrician is a Dr. who has spent extra training and time educating themselves about the unique needs of older adults. They can serve as PCP doctors to those from their 70s+ who have multiple medical conditions.

So now that we have a basic understanding what a Geriatrician is, how can one benefit you? Let's take a look:

1. You Take Several Medications

A quality Geriatrician will aid you in weaning off any medications that are not working, or that they feel are simply unnecessary. They can work with you to find what is best for your body. Remember, they specialize in senior care, so their knowledge will be more vast than a normal PCP.

2. Mental Decline

When you get older, mental decline is a natural reality. A Geriatrician can work with you to develop strategies to keep your mind sharp and focused.

3. You and your PCP have not made Progress

Maybe you've found that your PCP hasn't been meeting your needs? Not every Dr. is created equal, and sometimes it's okay to move on. You may be surprised at the rapport you can build with someone specializing in Geriatrics.

4. Frailty

This might be the most common reason many seek a Geriatrician. Age is natural, as is frailty. To understand the aging process and help educate yourself as to what you can do to slow it down. A Geriatrician can give helpful advice regarding frailty that a PCP might not have on hand, simply because they may not have the same kind of experience with older adults.

5. Guidance

Overall, we all just want peace of mind when it comes to our health. An experienced Geriatrician who understands the bodies of seniors can provide that for anyone in their 70s and up. They can provide support and mental ease.

It's not always easy aging, but the golden years contain much wisdom and simple pleasures that you may not have appreciated at a younger age. Please [omitted] us if you require any help or assistance.
